JANET JOPSON
Batik
I like to work in a very free and individual manner in this ancient art of Batik, which uses molten wax, inks and dyes on cloth or paper, to produce individual decorative 2D pieces which are completed by framing and mounting them behind glass.
I love experimenting with the technique of Batik, which is so fluid and colourful, I use a Tchanting tool to lay in molten wax lines, and a brush to paint on areas that can be crazed to create depth. The inks are transluscent and they build up to create the illusion of light and atmosphere.
Each year I make discoveries about the effects of wax and inks that can be adjusted and refined throughout the making process, and I am eager to start the next pieces!
I look for compositions that will work most successfully using colour texture and line.
My themes, at the moment, are local land and seascapes, flowers and animals and the inspiration I get from my favourite Contemporary Designers and artists in History.
